Federal Bureau of Prisons Release Outcomes
No BOP institution was identified inside Reagan County. This page covers the nationwide federal prison system because a person with a Reagan County connection may enter federal custody elsewhere. A federal defendant does not become a Reagan County jail release merely because an arrest or case touched the county.
BOP explains that a past Release Date with no facility shown means the person left BOP custody on that date. A location of “RELEASED” also means no longer in BOP custody. Neither statement establishes that the person is free of every custodian. State charges, a local warrant, immigration custody, or another federal process can continue. Federal supervised release is also distinct from prison custody.
Confirm a Federal Bureau of Prisons Release
The BOP Inmate Locator is the strongest public historical federal release channel identified in the research. It covers federal inmates released after 1982 and is updated daily.
- Search by BOP Register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number when one is known.
- Otherwise enter first, middle, and last name, then narrow with race, age, and sex.
- Match name, register number, age, race, and sex before reading the custody result.
- Record the displayed Release Date and Location exactly, including “RELEASED,” “IN TRANSIT,” or a facility.
- Use PACER to read the judgment or release order and check another custodian when the record points elsewhere.
The locator can include some people who never served a federal sentence, including certain pretrial detainees, dismissed-case defendants, or material witnesses. Reagan County lies in the San Angelo Division of the Northern District of Texas. PACER can supply the docket and judgment for a federal case. It does not replace the BOP locator's physical-custody fields, and the locator does not replace the court's signed legal record.
BOP Custody Serving Reagan County Cases
BOP confines people sentenced in the federal system. It is different from the U.S. Marshals Service, which manages many federal prisoners between court remand and release, acquittal, or delivery to a designated BOP institution. A person held temporarily in a county contract bed may not yet have a useful BOP locator entry.
No BOP prison was verified in Reagan County. “Serving Reagan County” means the federal system may hold a person whose case or custody history has a local connection. It does not mean the nationwide agency operates a Big Lake facility. If the Reagan jail reports release to USMS, request the county transfer entry and use the federal docket or USMS inquiry rather than assuming a community release.
Federal Release Dates Require Context
BOP results display name, register number, age, race, sex, Release Date, and Location. A date in the future is not an actual release record. BOP warns that sentence recalculation, including First Step Act work, may temporarily affect accuracy. A past date paired with released status is stronger, but it remains limited to BOP custody.

Preserve the date and status together. Do not convert “not in BOP custody” into “not incarcerated anywhere,” and do not treat prison release as the end of supervised release or the underlying federal case.
USMS Custody Before a BOP Record
The U.S. Marshals Service has no BOP-style public historical locator. It commonly controls federal detainees from court remand until release or transfer to a designated prison. If BOP returns no match, review the federal docket and ask the known contract holding facility or USMS for existing records.
The official USMS custody overview explains this role, while its FOIA channel is the records fallback. Federal victim notifications may use DOJ VNS rather than Texas VINE. Each tool has a narrow function; none should be treated as a universal former-inmate search.
From Reagan Jail to Federal Custody
A Reagan County movement record may say federal hold, USMS, or another receiving authority. That entry ends the county booking but does not show release into the community. First obtain the sheriff's booking/release sheet and receiving-agency field. Then locate the federal docket and check BOP only if the person entered BOP custody.
The reverse distinction matters too. A historical BOP release does not answer whether Reagan County or another Texas jurisdiction later held the same person. Match identifiers and dates across systems, and ask each custodian only about its own custody period. An arrest record is not proof of guilt, and a released result is not proof that every case ended.
